Richard Shumway, MHA

Chief Administrative Officer and Vice President

Richard “Rick” Shumway became chief administrative officer and vice president for UC Medical Center on May 1, 2017. Formerly an executive director at University of Utah Health Care, Shumway is a leader in health system operations and financial management, service line oversight and development, and physician-hospital alignment.

Shumway’s career in healthcare began in frontline positions at Utah Valley Hospital before he shifted focus toward healthcare administration and academic medicine. In addition to his previous role at University of Utah Health Care, Shumway has held administrative positions at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Listed in 2016 as a “Rising Star” by Becker’s Hospital Review, Shumway has presented at many national conferences on topics including value-based care and service line growth. He holds a bachelor of science in public health from Brigham Young University and a master of health services administration from the University of Washington.


Andrew Filak, MD

Vice President of Education

Andrew Filak, MD, is responsible for aligning education-related initiatives between the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and all UC Health locations.

In his role, Dr. Filak provides oversight for all educational activities on University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s campus, along with activities at University of Cincinnati Physicians, West Chester Hospital and Drake Center. He also directs the Graduate Medical Education (GME) office and is the hospital’s Associate Chief of Staff for Graduate Medical Education.

In addition to his UC Health responsibilities, Dr. Filak also serves as Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He previously served as Interim Dean of the UC College of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs.

Dr. Filak is board certified in Family Medicine and practices at the UC Physicians office in Clifton. He earned his Medical Degree from George Washington University and completed his residency at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Filak is a member of the American Medical Association and the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and has provided counsel to various committees with each group.


Joseph Giglia, MD

Chief of Staff

Joseph Giglia, MD, is a board-certified vascular surgeon and associate professor of surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. A member of the UC Heart, Lung and Vascular Institute, Giglia earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and master’s and medical degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

He completed a general surgery residency at University of Michigan and vascular surgery research and clinical fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.
