Richard P. Lofgren
President and CEO, UC Health
Richard P. (Rick) Lofgren, MD, MPH, FACP, became president and CEO of UC Health in December 2013. He is a board-certified internal medicine physician and administrator with 35 years of experience in health care.
Most recently, Dr. Lofgren served as senior vice president and chief clinical officer for University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), an alliance of 120 academic medical centers and 300 of their affiliated hospitals, headquartered in Chicago. As a member of the organization’s senior executive team, he was responsible for helping UHC members improve the quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of clinical services as they transformed their health care systems. His responsibilities included health care delivery redesign, operational efficiencies, performance improvement and applied health services/quality research.
Prior to UHC, Dr. Lofgren spent eight years at UK HealthCare, the University of Kentucky’s health system and academic medical center. Joining as chief medical officer in 2004, he was a member of the senior executive team that transformed UK HealthCare into an integrated clinical enterprise and increased market share from 28.5 percent to 43.3 percent and revenues from $345 million to $705 million in five years. He also implemented new programs that reduced mortality by 30 percent.
Dr. Lofgren was promoted in 2008 to vice president for health care operations and chief clinical officer with executive oversight of UK HealthCare’s clinical services, including its three hospitals, ambulatory services and faculty practices. He grew discharges by 23.6 percent, operating room cases by 33 percent and emergency department visits by more than 66 percent. He also increased the number of inpatient and outpatient referrals—driving a 32 percent growth of inpatient transfers and a 24 percent growth of new patient visits to physician practices.
Before joining UK HealthCare, Dr. Lofgren held various hospital, faculty and administrative posts throughout the Midwest including the Medical College of Wisconsin, the University of Pittsburgh (and the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center), the University of Minnesota (and the Minneapolis VA Medical Center) and Michigan State University.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, completed his residency and chief residency at the University of Minnesota and received a master of public health from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.
Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
Peter N. Gilbert joined UC Health as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in May 2015.
Mr. Gilbert was previously COO and Senior Vice President at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Maryland’s only public health, law, and human services university. His previous positions include serving as UMB’s vice president for planning and accountability, as associate dean for administration and finance at the UK College of Medicine, and as a senior financial manager and an assistant administrator for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics.
He has a master’s degree from Loyola University in Maryland.
He and his wife, Francine, have three children, Nick, a junior at the University of Maryland; Katherine, a freshman at Gettysburg College, and Meredith, a seventh grader.
Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Rick Hinds was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for UC Health in 2010. He served as the Interim Chief Executive Officer for UC Health’s predecessor company, the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, since 2009, also serving as the Health Alliance’s Chief Financial Officer since 2008.
Prior to these roles he was Vice President of Finance for University Hospital Cincinnati from 2005 to 2008. Mr. Hinds was Vice President of Finance and Operations for Fort Hamilton Hospital from 1995 to 2005. He also served as President and CEO of the Fort Hamilton Healthcare Corporation from 2004 to 2006, and its CFO from 1998 to 2006. Mr. Hinds spent ten years in the health insurance industry prior to moving to the healthcare industry in 1995.
Mr. Hinds earned his bachelor’s of business administration in accounting from the University of Cincinnati in 1982, and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1985.
In 2011 Mr. Hinds’ achievements and healthcare industry contributions were recognized when he was honored as the Cincinnati Business Courier’s CFO of the Year. He has been a member of various professional associations and served on numerous community and healthcare boards. A life-long resident of Cincinnati, Mr. Hinds is involved in many community and civic activities, has been married to his wife Linda for 33 years, and has four children.
Evaline Alessandrini, MD
Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer
Evaline A. Alessandrini, MD, MSCE, joined UC Health in December 2017 as chief medical officer. She has served on UC Health’s Board of Directors and chaired the Board’s Patient Care Committee.
Alessandrini has served as professor and associate chair of outcomes and process improvement in the Department of Pediatrics within the UC College of Medicine and has been practicing clinically in pediatric emergency medicine for 25 years. At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, she has served as the assistant vice president for improvement integration within the James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence working with clinical institutes, divisions and business units to manage strategically aligned clinical portfolios focused on improving outcomes, experience and value of care.
Dr. Alessandrini completed her fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Her residency was completed at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She received a masters’ degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her undergraduate degree from Marquette University.
Senior Vice President & Chief Legal Counsel
Charles Pangburn serves as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of UC Health. In this role, he leads the Office of General Counsel and is responsible for providing counsel, oversight and management for all legal matters arising out of the activities and operations of UC Health and its hospitals and physician division. The Office of General Counsel consists of four departments – the Department of Legal Services, the Department of Risk Management, the Department of Compliance, and the Department of Contract Management.
Prior to joining UC Health in 2011, Mr. Pangburn served as the Chief Legal Officer & General Counsel for University of Cincinnati Physicians, Inc. (UCP), the multispecialty practice group that supports UC Health and the UC College of Medicine. He also served for a time in the Office of General Counsel of the University of Cincinnati and provided legal support to the Academic Health Center and the University’s Office of Research. Other experience includes 20 years of private law practice, during which he served as a partner in two law firms. Mr. Pangburn is a retired Marine with 30 years of active and reserve service, including a combat tour in Iraq in 2004. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, from the U.S. Naval Academy and his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from the Villanova University School of Law.
Mr. Pangburn’s professional and community activities have included the Chairmanship of both the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee, membership on the Boards of the Tri-County Economic Development Corporation, the Northern Kentucky Convention & Visitors Bureau, The Point/ARC of Northern Kentucky and the Regional Leadership Forum, Co-Chairmanship of the Vision 2015 Governance Team and membership on the Steering Committee for the Education Alliance of Northern Kentucky, the Steering Committee for NKU Partnerships and the Technical Advisory Committee for the Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Committee.
Mr. Pangburn lives with his wife, Connie, in Fort Wright, Kentucky. He has one daughter, Kimberly, one son, Chas, one step-daughter, Stephanie, and two granddaughters, Mila and Stella.
Senior Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer
Clarence Pauley has served in the role of Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer since January 2014. He has a long and distinguished history guiding the human resources efforts of large healthcare institutions. He has also served as Vice President of Human Resources for UC Medical Center for seven years and Director of Human Resources for a former affiliate hospital for eight years.
In addition to his work in healthcare, Mr. Pauley proudly served with the United States military with service both in the Army and the Air Force Reserves. He was deployed overseas to combat several times over a military career that spanned 30 years.
Earlier in his career, he worked for Children’s Protective Services of Hamilton County Ohio. Mr. Pauley co-authored an article that appeared in the Journal of Health & Life Sciences Law entitled “Improving Evaluations in the Healthcare Workplace: A Case Study”. Awards he received are: the Who’s Who in Black Cincinnati Award, the Merlin G. Pope Jr. Diversity Through Leadership Award, and the Black Achievers Award. He was also recognized by the Cincinnati Business Courier as a finalist for the Health Care Heroes Award
Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing and Communications Officer
Kristen H. Wevers joined UC Health in June 2016 as the Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, a position created to serve on the executive leadership team and to distinguish UC Health as the preferred academic health system in the Midwest.
Wevers was recruited by The Procter & Gamble Company upon graduation from college and served for 17 years in leadership roles including global media relations, internal communications and consumer relations, and in positions across the United States in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and consumer marketing & sales. She served as company spokesperson for Procter & Gamble’s North American Marketing and Sales functions.
Most recently, Wevers served six years at Mercy Health as the Chief Brand, Marketing & Communications officer where she unified seven individual local health systems and ancillary services across Ohio and Kentucky under a singular brand by aligning the CEO, executives and physicians under one brand:one name, mission, values, promise and experience as an integrated delivery system.
Prior to joining Mercy Health, Wevers spent six years as Officer and Vice President for Messer Construction Co. During her tenure with Messer, Wevers was responsible for service line business strategy and market growth, corporate brand, sales/business development, customer and community relation’s strategy, and corporate reputation management.
Wevers earned her Master’s degree from Xavier University and her Bachelor’s degree from Denison University. She completed strategic marketing coursework at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, as well as numerous advanced leadership training courses.
